According to The Telegraph, Sheffield Wednesday are one of several Championship sides looking at Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster over a potential loan move next month.
Although, the Owls are far from the favourites to clinch him.
What’s the word?
It is believed that Swansea City are the front-runners to sign the 19-year-old striker as manager Steve Cooper has a long-standing relationship with him having coached him when England won the U17s World Cup back in 2017.
The report states that a move to the second-tier seems most likely with Leeds United, Preston North End and Huddersfield Town all keen.
Brewster has featured just twice for Jurgen Klopp’s senior side and was named on the bench for last season’s Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
This season for the U23 squad, he has bagged five goals across the Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League, per Transfermarkt.
Devastating blow
With the Swans being expected to win the battle for the young prospect, it could be a devastating blow for Garry Monk as he requires additions in the January transfer window – not at least to stamp down his mark amongst the squad he’s inherited.
It’s even worse to lose out to a potential playoff rival as it could come back to bite them later down the line.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Brewster has been compared to three of Liverpool’s great strikers – Ian Rush, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler so that only goes to show the level of quality on offer.
The U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner has also been talked up by Steven Gerrard, who said: “If Rhian wants to go far and stay at the top, if he can put in that work rate and relentless running, that’s how he’s going to get the better of most defenders.”
Brewster would offer the Owls attack something they don’t quite possess – pace and dynamism. He could be the strike partner target man Steven Fletcher needs to help fire Wednesday towards promotion.
